Maintenance Worker I
GENERAL SUMMARY:
Under the supervision of the Superintendent of Buildings and Grounds, performs a variety of preventative maintenance and repair tasks on County facilities and equipment. Makes repairs to electrical, plumbing, and mechanical systems, performs carpentry tasks, and maintains and repairs various equipment. Maintains the grounds of County buildings and Parks.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Basic electrical knowledge.
- Basic plumbing knowledge.
- Basic carpentry knowledge. May construct storage and shelving units, as well as, install partitions or modular units.
- May monitor the operation of heating and air conditioning units and checking filters.
- Operates riding mowers and power mowers to cut grass on the County grounds. Trims grass, trees, shrubs, and hedges with power and hand equipment. Operates power edger’s for sidewalks. Removes brush, dead trees and other debris from grounds.
- Installs landscape timbers, spreads woodchips, and performs other landscaping tasks. Plants grass, flowers, shrubs, and trees.
- Operates trucks with plows and snow blowers to remove snow from County parking lots. Operates snow blowers and sweepers to clean snow from sidewalks. Shovels entrances and other areas inaccessible to power equipment.
- Installs carpet, tiles, and other floor coverings.
- Performs maintenance on grounds equipment, includes changing oil, changing filters, lubricating, changing fluids, and sharpening blades.
- Assists in the maintenance of County parks by mowing and trimming grass and performing related grounds keeping tasks, performs repairs to park facilities, and installs playground and other equipment.
- Sets up rooms for meetings. Assists in office transfers by helping move office furniture, file cabinets, and office equipment.
- Performs interior and exterior painting, includes repairing and preparing walls for painting and applying various types of paint. Hangs wallpaper. Strips, refinishes and repairs furniture.
- Performs other general repairs to County buildings, fixtures, and equipment.
- Performs custodial tasks as needed.
OTHER FUNCTIONS:
- Opens and closes buildings and assists in ensuring building security.

EMPLOYMENT QUALIFICATIONS:
Education: High school graduation or equivalent. Prefer skills and training in electrical, plumbing, and other building trades’ areas.
Experience: Two years of experience in the maintenance and repair of building and mechanical systems.
Other Requirements: Possession of a valid Michigan Driver’s License.

- Ability to lift bags of salt, boxes of supplies, and other items weighing up to 50 lbs
- Ability to lift and move plumbing fixtures and other equipment involved in repair tasks
- Climbing on ladders and scaffolding for painting jobs
- Walks over uneven terrain to operate grounds equipment and remove snow
- Operating trucks with snow removal equipment and to haul equipment
WORKING CONDITIONS:
- Works in confined spaces
- Works outside in varying weather conditions
- Works in all areas of County buildings and grounds
- Works in cramped body positions to perform maintenance and repairs
- Works in areas with loud noise
- Exposure to equipment where risk exists of getting burned, bruised or scraped
- Contact with oil and petroleum products
- Exposure to large moving parts of various equipment
- Exposure to solvents, boiler chemicals and various other chemicals
- Exposure to gases and fumes
- Exposure to communicable diseases in the course of some maintenance assignments
- Exposure to environmental allergens such as grass, weeds and pollens

SALARY AND BENEFITS:
- $36,212.80 to $44,304.00
- $17.41-$21.30 per hour, 40hr work week

- 401 (A) and 457 (B) Plan-3% mandatory employee contribution, 3% match by County with up to an additional 3% match by County if employee opts for an additional 3%, totaling 12%
