POSSE – SHERIFF’S DEPARTMENT

The Sheriff’s Office Posse is a volunteer organization for dedicated members who are willing to assist the Sheriff’s Office in matters of the law and public relations. We are expected to take and uphold the same oath that the regular deputies abide by. We are a representative of the Shiawassee County Sheriff’s Office and the Sheriff himself and must conduct ourselves accordingly. There is a one-year probationary period. You will be reviewed by the Executive Board of the Posse as to your performance and behavior and this will lead to you being accepted as a full member or not.

As a member of the Posse, you can expect the first year to be the most expensive. The cost to complete a full uniform with a handgun can average from $500 to $1,000. You will have to purchase the first 1,000 rounds of ammunition from the Sheriff’s Posse for the initial qualification. The duty ammunition will be supplied by the Sheriff’s Posse. The first year will also be more demanding in terms of your time, such as new-member training classes, in addition to the yearly mandatory training classes and qualifying sessions. The instructors are flexible, but if these classes are not completed, the member will be suspended until all requirements are met.

Members are expected to volunteer for at least 24 hours of service per quarter, not including Sheriff’s Posse duty at the Shiawassee County Fair. These hours of service can be reviewed by the Sheriff’s Posse Board on an individual basis. This includes mandatory sessions and qualifying time. Activities are, but not limited to: Fingerprints of children, parades, special events, transports, working at the Shiawassee County Fair and being called out to assist deputies in the event of emergencies or planned events, which may be criminal warrant arrests.

The decision to become a posse member is a serious undertaking. If you are married or have a significant other, they should be included in your decision. The risk factor is the same as any paid deputy. You must be prepared to give some time to this organization and contribute to the support of Shiawassee County and its residents.

If after review the expectations and understanding the obligations you are required to meet, the Posse Board would like you to complete this application.

Please return the application to the Sheriff’s Liaison Officer to the Posse at the Sheriff’s Office, along with a copy of your Concealed Pistol License (CPL) and your driver’s license.
