Welcome to the 35th Judicial Circuit Court

What we do…

The 35th Judicial Circuit Court of Shiawassee County is the trial court of general jurisdiction. It is the court of original jurisdiction for all civil actions with amounts in controversy over $25,000, or more, and criminal cases where the offense involves a felony or circuit court (“high court”) misdemeanor. It is comprised of different divisions, Civil, Criminal and the Family Division. The Circuit Court also hears cases appealed from lower courts and from some administrative agencies of State government. Cases which involve family issues, such as divorce, paternity, child support, neglect/ abuse and delinquencies are assigned to the Family Division of Circuit Court. Through the Chief Judge, the court has oversight for other departments which serve as extensions of the court, including the Friend of the Court Office and the County Jury Commission. Criminal appellate assignments are handled through the Circuit Court, as well as appointments for indigent criminal defendants who require court-appointed counsel. There is one Circuit Court Judge in Shiawassee County who, along with the Probate Judge, presides over Family Court matters.
